Presentation

The Centro Nacional de Microbiología (National Microbiology Centre) is involved in all aspects pertaining to contagious diseases affecting human beings through the following branches: bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and virology.

Functions

Its functions are as follows:

a) Collaborate with the National Healthcare System in the microbiological study of infections diseases and their impact on Public Health.

b) Carry out basic and applied research programs in contagious disease related areas.

c) Study the characteristics of micro-organisms and their evolution in order to develop more efficient control and prevention measures.

d) Within the National Healthcare System, participate in laboratory microbiological activities aimed at resolving outbreaks, epidemics, or other microbial aetiology health emergencies. 

e) Act as the National Reference Laboratory human zoonosis cases pursuant to Royal Decree 2491/1994, enacted 23 December (RCL 1995, 146) which establishes protective measures against specific zoonosis resulting from the consumption of animals or animal origin products to prevent food-related infections or intoxications.

f) Undertake as many actions and studies in its area of competency as may be required for providing support to the Ministry of Health and Consumption and the Autonomous Regions.
